Mysa for MAC

Free, open-source menu bar app for Mac that frosts your screen for a short breathing break, with a breathing orb and handwritten lines.

Mysa Overview

Mysa is a tiny menu bar app for Mac that makes you take a breather. Press its shortcut or click its icon and the screen goes frosted and dim, a small orb breathes in and out, and a line of text writes itself across the screen in handwriting while you breathe, drawing on as you inhale and undrawing as you exhale. Press Escape and you are back to work.

Mysa is made by Ali Shan and is free and open source under the MIT license. While a break is on screen, it blocks mouse and keyboard input to other apps on purpose, so you actually stop. It comes with seven breathing patterns and lets you build your own, and you can change the look of the overlay live while you breathe. The developer calls it a relaxation toy, not a medical device. Mysa 1.0 is the first release. It needs macOS 14 or later, and the download is built for Apple Silicon Macs only. It is not notarized by Apple, so macOS refuses to open it the first time: right-click the app and choose Open, or remove the quarantine flag in Terminal.

Key Features

Mysa turns a few seconds of breathing into a calm full-screen break.

  • Frosted overlay: the screen goes blurred and dim while you breathe.
  • Breathing orb: a small orb grows and shrinks with each breath.
  • Handwritten lines: a short, light-hearted line writes itself in handwriting in time with your breathing.
  • Seven patterns: 4-7-8, box, coherent, triangle, extended exhale, diaphragmatic and pursed lip.
  • Custom patterns: build your own rhythm from breathing phases and seconds.
  • Global shortcut: Control-Option-Command-B by default, changeable from the menu, with no Accessibility prompt.
  • Live settings: adjust tint, blur, grain, ambient mode and gradient without leaving the break.
  • Focus guard: input to other apps is blocked until you press Escape, the close button or the shortcut again.
